The History of Thetford

Full of history and with a picturesque river-side setting, Thetford is the ideal destination to spend a few nights, enjoying the superb mix of history and entertainment on offer.

The Saxon town of Thetford was one of England’s most important settlements from as early as the 10th century and the history of the town over the last one thousand years is still very much in evidence today.

Old timber-framed houses sit happily beside the more recent brick-built ones and the flint, much of it mined locally, is very much in evidence in shops, houses, churches and many other buildings.

The town’s heritage is reflected in an amazing array of medieval ruins and the Norman Castle Mound is one of the highest man-made Mottes in the country.
