Quarters Cottages Cranworth near Dereham and Watton is in the village of Cranworth which is a civil parish in the Breckland district of mid-Norfolk, East Anglia, England, in the United Kingdom. It has an area of 20.63 km² with an estimated population of 415 in 2007, increasing to 419 taken at the 2011 Census. Cranworth village has a church, St. Marys in the Benefice of Reymerston.

The History behind Quarters Cottages Cranworth.  The owners are Lesley, and Barrie Adams.  For over 30 years Barrie has been an antique dealer and this involved travelling to France and buying, and specialising in beautiful French beds and Armoires. In 1999 we built and opened a care home specialising in young adults with special needs and went on to open two more.

In 2015 Barrie and I decided to retire and spent two years rebuilding and renovating Quarters Cottages, turning Quarters Cottages into unique and luxurious accommodation for holiday makers and dog friendly.  Our aim was to make the houses comfortable and of high quality finish because we believed everyone deserved this.

At Quarters cottages Cranworth and while sitting in the gardens, you can look out over open fields and see deer and other wildlife including owls and woodpeckers.  The sunrise and sunsets are truly magnificent.  Barry and I live within the Quarters Cottages grounds and can help with any information regarding the local area.  We are also very proud to have been able to preserve the wonderful murals painted on the walls by the American Airforce during WWII.

All Quarters Cottages properties have been named after events that happened here and the people that were important on this site during that time.  At Quarters Cottages Cranworth not far from Dereham, you’ll find four exquisite cottages with character, heritage and all have been beautifully restored.  The cottages are renovated quarters and cottages used by the US Navy during the Second World War between 1943 and 1944.  The base was home to the Flying Eight Balls and we have managed to make the most of the artwork and features they left behind over 70 years ago.

The cottages, Eight Ball House, Lemon Drop Cottage, Leon Cottage and Wingate Cottage, comprise of a one, two, three and a four bedroom cottages sleeping from two to  seven guests.  All cottages and gardens can be easily accessed by people with mobility issues. All accommodation is ground floor with doors wide enough for wheelchairs.

Corner of England That Will Be Forever America by Martin W. Bowman  In the remote and quiet heart of the Norfolk countryside where B-24 Liberators once flew, there is a corner of a ‘foreign field’ that will be forever America.  In 1942-45 Shipdham airfield was the home to the 44th ‘Flying Eightballs’ Bomb Group. Just off the main airfield site is Cranworth (can one get more English than this?) where the 14th Bombardment Wing Headquarters controlled the 44th BG, 392nd BG at Wendling nearby and the 466th Bomb Group at Attlebridge near Norwich.

When I was a teenager I investigated the myriad number of airfields (fourteen) in the local areas around my fair city of Norwich, often taking to my motorbike to explore these talked about airfields which had just been featured in a book called The Mighty Eighth by one Roger Freeman. Having previously thought that these bases were occupied by the RAF Bomber and Fighter squadrons in WW2, I was intrigued to discover that they had in fact been ‘invaded’ and taken over by the US 8th Air Force USAF.  Read More…..
